Psychoanalytic Theory of Psychosocial Development

Identity vs. Role Confusion

The fifth stage is identity vs. role confusion, and it occurs during adolescence, from about 12-18 years. During this stage adolescents search for a sense of self and personal identity, through an intense exploration of personal values, beliefs and goals.

The adolescent mind is essentially a mind or moratorium, a psychosocial stage between childhood and adulthood, and between the morality learned by the child, and the ethics to be developed by the adult (Erikson, 1963, p.245)

Research Agenda: Adolescent Girls of Color

  • What components of racial-ethnic culture are critical for development of positive identities in girls of color? Do components vary across racial-ethnic groups?

  • What is the impact of economic status on the development of adolescent girls of color in terms of education, motivation, and behavior?

  • Do race-ethnicity and social class have the same impact for adolescent girls and adolescent boys of color? Do the difference, if any, suggest different intervention strategies?

  • What factors explain the drop in self esteem in Black and Hispanic adolescent girls? What is the role of context in the examination of self esteem for these two groups of girls?
